Heat Lamp Operation & Application Infrared Heat Lamp, Stationary Model

Lamp Operation
  • On patient models turn the switch to on.
  • On lamps supplied with a heat control only, set the heat controller to high.
  • On lamps having a timer switch, turn the timer to the desired treatment time.
  • On professional models provided with a timer and heat controller, turn the controller to high and then turn the lamp on with the timer.
When the lamp has reached maximum temperature, dial the proper heat setting,
then set the timer switch for the proper treatment time.

Technique of Application
  1. Place the properly draped patient in a comfortable position with the treatment area exposed.  The room should be warm and the patient as relaxed as possible.
  2. Place the lamp at right angles to the area to be treated for maximum intensity.  There will be a gradual decreases in intensity as the direction of the rays become more oblique (indirect) in relation to the treatment surface.
  3. The amount of heat produced is determined by the distance between the lamp and the patient AND the dial setting on the variable control (not used on all units).  Adjust the lamp to produce a comfortable sensation of heat on the area to be treated.  Begin with a distance of 24" and a mid-range setting on the dial..adjust accordingly.  Normal length of treatment is from 15 - 40 minutes.  The physician or therapist will prescribe the amount of heat desired for the condition being treated.  Treatment may be repeated several times a day if indicated.
  4. When person to be treated is asleep, in a coma, delirious or paralyzed, or for any other reason not normally sensitive to heat, the lamp must be adjusted do that the treatment area will not become too hot or a burn may result!  The same precautions must be taken for children too young to express their reactions.
  5. CAUTION - Over exposure may cause wheals (welt or swelling of the skin) and eventual blistering.  Scars and anesthetic areas should be protected.  Patients eyes should be protected with goggles so as not to dry out tissues.
  6. DO NOT TOUCH THE REFLECTOR, WIRE GUARD OR HEATING ELEMENT DURING OPERATION.  A SERIOUS BURN MAY RESULT!
  7. These lamps are not recommended for maintaining infant body temperature.
Troubleshooting

If within a few minutes the lamp does not produce heat, the following may be the cause:
  1. Burned out fuse or tripped circuit breaker.  Check the outlet with a lamp having a standard light bulb.
  2. Connecting cord may not be making good electrical contact.
  3. In the case of patient models, the heating element may be loose in the socket or defective.  If tight, check lamp by installing a standard light bulb...if it functions replace unit (lamp).
  4. In any other case, consult your electrician or return lamp for service.  (call to get authorization number prior to returning lamp)

Electrical

Each infrared lamp is to be supplied by a 110-120 volt, 50-60 HZ separate circuit, fused with a 15 amp fuse or circuit breaker
and terminated in a properly grounded 3 prong wall receptacle.
No other electrical device should be operated on the same circuit when the lamp is in operation.
